PFLAG Sussex County invites you to join us for a thoughtful and engaging book discussion centered on The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. This meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Sparta United Methodist Church and is open to LGBTQ+ individuals, family members, friends, allies, and community members.
The Upside of Unrequited follows Molly Peskin-Suso, a thoughtful and introspective teenager who has experienced countless crushes but has never been kissed. As a self-described hopeless romantic, Molly believes deeply in love—yet her anxiety and fear of vulnerability often hold her back. When her twin sister begins dating a girl and confidently steps into her own romantic journey, Molly is prompted to examine her own insecurities, expectations, and beliefs about relationships. Told with warmth, humor, and emotional honesty, the novel explores themes of first love, self-acceptance, anxiety, friendship, and LGBTQ+ relationships, while gently challenging the idea that there is a single “right” path to love.
During this discussion, we will explore the themes and issues presented in the book and reflect on how they connect to everyday life, including identity, emotional resilience, communication, and navigating relationships at different stages of life. Participants are encouraged to share insights, personal reflections, and questions in a respectful and supportive environment.
Reading the book is not required to attend. Whether you have read the novel in full, are familiar with its themes, or simply wish to take part in a meaningful community conversation, you are warmly welcome. Our goal is to foster connection, understanding, and dialogue that extends beyond the pages of the book and into our shared lived experiences.
We look forward to coming together for an evening of conversation, reflection, and community support.
